Frequently asked questions

The Consumer Data Right (CDR) is an Australian Government initiative that gives consumers and businesses greater control over their data. In the energy sector, the CDR enables account holders to securely share their electricity data — such as usage, billing and account details — with accredited third parties like Volt Data. All data sharing is consent-based, regulated by the ACCC, and protected by strict privacy and security standards.

To share electricity data through the CDR, the account holder must complete a short online authorisation workflow. This involves selecting their electricity retailer, logging in to verify their identity, and consenting to the specific data they wish to share. The process is completed entirely online and typically takes just a few minutes.

A CDR authorisation can last for a maximum of 12 months. Once the authorisation period expires, the account holder will need to complete a new authorisation to continue sharing their data. Authorisations can also be withdrawn at any time by the account holder through their retailer or through Volt Data's interface.

Unfortunately not. Volt Data is only available to electricity account holders in Australia with retailers that have implemented CDR data sharing. We hope to expand to other markets in the future as open data initiatives gain traction globally.

Large electricity retailers have been integrated. Small and medium retailers have been integrated to varying extents. We encourage you to check the CDR Register to see if your retailer is listed.
